Low Impact in the Busy Seasons: 10 Easy Steps

Life. Gets. Busy. We have all been there. I am currently there. The semester is coming to a close which means I have multiple papers, various assignments, and finals to study for. On top of this, I am applying for jobs, planning a trip to BC, and trying to manage all the normal commitments of life. During times like this, it can be really easy to give up on trying to live a low impact lifestyle and do what is most efficient (this option usually involves so much waste). However, there are a few tricks I have found that make living a low impact lifestyle much easier when the path you are walking has you up to your eyeballs in work, commitments, and the like.

#1: Pack a Lunch

You are going to get hungry and if you do not have something to munch on, you are much more likely to give into buying a quick snack or meal (which, chances are good, is not only bad for the environment - think plastic waste, but also bad for your body - think nutrition). Packing a lunch is actually pretty simple to follow through on as long as you are thinking about it ahead of time. I usually pack my lunch the night before because I would prefer to have the extra few minutes to sleep in the morning. The point is, find a time that works for you, and follow through on making those lunches before it is too late and you need to run out the door.

#2: Meal Prep

This ties in with the last one. When I have time, I make freezer meals. These are simple meals that can be pulled out of the freezer and put in the slow cooker for the day or the oven when I get home. Once again, you need to think of this ahead of time but trust me, it is so worth it.

#3: Reusable Water Bottle

Find a water bottle that you already have in your home, fill it up, and bring it with you everywhere you go. Sometimes I use it, other times I do not. But I have never regretted bring a water bottle because when I need it, it is there. Not only is this option convenient and simple, it also saves you money and the environment from another plastic bottle.

#4: Ask For No Straw

When you do go out, ask for no straw in your beverage. This is a simple way to create a small difference in this great big world.

#5: Bring Reusable Bags

Many of us have a reusable bag of some sort lying around the house just begging to be used. Give in. Use the bag. If you happen to be someone who does not have one already, use old grocery bags or a backpack - there is always something. My husband and I keep reusable bags in our car and around the house so that no matter where we go/how we get there, we almost always have a reusable bag with us. And for those times we forget the bags - we carry things out. It may be a little more inconvenient, but it is not that big of a deal. When you do have the time, use this tutorial to create your own reusable bag!

#6: Buy Fruit

Fruit is usually sold in bulk, so there is no plastic waste. Not to mention, this is a delicious and easy snack to have on the go.

#7: Choose Products with Less Packaging

Simple Right? Opt for items that have less packaging and, therefore, less waste when you are shopping.

#8: Buy in Bulk

Save money by buying only what you need instead of a pre-portioned package. Save the environment by reducing your waste footprint.

#9: Bring Cutlery and Fabric Napkins With You

I am notorious for spilling everything. I have come to accept it. But, that means I usually slop some food on myself or the table when I am eating - hence the reason for fabric napkins. If you are someone who also uses napkins often (or a napkin substitute like paper towel), then this tip is for you. And for those of you that do not need napkins, you probably need cutlery (unless you eat finger foods without a needing a napkin...), so this tip is also for you.

#10: Remember - Start Small

Do not give up. Going zero waste is not something that will happen overnight - especially if you are busy. Start with small changes then, as they become habits, add more. Do not fret when you "mess up." It happens. It is more than okay. You are trying and that is the most important thing. Living low impact does not have to be elaborate, you can incorporate it into things you already do (which is a lifesaver when busyness has become your norm).
